Japan gave me the most unique language experience of all. Japanese is beautiful but complex, yet even the simplest phrases carry deep respect.
- “Arigatou gozaimasu” – Thank you
- “Sumimasen” – Excuse me
- “Konnichiwa” – Hello
One evening in Osaka, after finishing a bowl of ramen, I bowed slightly and said:
“Arigatou gozaimasu.”
The chef’s smile was so genuine, it felt like a gift. He bowed back, then brought me a free side dish.
No English was spoken.
No long conversation.
But we understood each other perfectly.
Japan showed me that language is not only in words — it’s in tone, gestures, and respect.
Every bow, every polite phrase, every quiet moment carries meaning.
